ATM cash withdrawals fall 20% last year, with number of machines also dipping slightly

SINGAPORE – Cash has long been king, but it is being rapidly dethroned amid the Covid-19 pandemic as people like early childhood educator Gabrielle Hoang increasingly exploit the convenience of plastic and e-payments.

Ms Hoang, 25, has not withdrawn money from an ATM since the virus hit, preferring to use her debit or credit cards for usual expenses on groceries, books and skincare, as well as the occasional meal out.
