And former Brexit Party MEP Ben Habib has said the bloc is increasingly resembling the Soviet Union – with the European Commission “the propaganda machine of a malignant institution” – while former colleague Brian Monteith said it was evidence that the UK had got out “in the nick of time”. Pro-Brexit think tank Facts4EU have pored over the findings of the bloc’s annual Eurobarometer survey, published yesterday – and have highlighted key areas which analysts suggest are indicative of deep systemic problems.

The survey, consisting of 92 questions, was undertaken jointly by the Commission – led by President Ursula von der Leyen – and the European Parliament in October and November of last year – prior to the problems which have characterised the EU’s vaccine strategy.

Among other things it revealed:

  • Just six percent of EU27 citizens hold a “very positive” image of the EU
  • Just 41 percent said their image of the EU is “fairly positive”
  • Just 34 percent of EU27 citizens believe the EU is going in the right direction
  • Top concerns were migration (43 percent) and terrorism (39 percent)

Facts4EU editor Leigh Evans said: “Migration and terrorism are not topics the EU Commission likes to talk about very much as they are not exactly areas in which the EU has exhibited competence.

“Nor is migration a topic on which the ordinary citizens of the EU are likely to agree with the ‘open borders’ ideologues inhabiting the EU’s many thousands of offices in Brussels. Nevertheless, these are the two topics at the top of ordinary people’s minds.”

Mr Evans added: “The third most important topic concerning people was “Handling global health issues.

“Given that since the survey was conducted last October and November the EU has made a complete mess of its vaccination programme and lags far behind the UK, the USA and other countries, we suspect that this issue might now be higher up in the priorities of EU citizens.

“This survey must make grim reading in Brussels.

“As usual they have done their best to bury the worst aspects, but we are pleased to bring some of these out in our customary analysis of the EU’s report.”

Mr Habib told Express.co.uk: “Every day that passes, the EU resembles more and more the Soviet Union of the pre-1990s.

“This has been evidenced best recently in its desire first to block the legitimate export of vaccines and then falsely to claim that it is the UK and the US that are prohibiting such exports.

“The EU Commission is progressively being revealed to be the propaganda machine of a malignant institution interested only in its own promotion and not the interests of its member states and their peoples.

“It is hardly surprising that those same people are now beginning to see the EU clearly.”

Brian Monteith, another former Brexit Party as well as a former member of the Scottish Parliament, told Express.co.uk: “It should come as no surprise to anyone that less than seven people in a hundred have a positive image of the EU.”

For years the bloc had sought to “suppress national identities, over-regulate what we can buy or sell or do in public and private”, Mr Monteith declared.

He added: “It gets in the way of creating jobs or enjoying ourselves and when it comes to saving life it has been a disaster in its response to Covid and especially in organising an effective vaccine.”

Mr Monteith also predicted things were about to get even worse for eurocrats.

He explained: “If this poll is repeated in six months’ time when EU citizens are still queuing for their vaccines its popularity will be even lower.

“Quite frankly the UK got out in the nick of time and there’s no good reason for going back.”

Former UKIP deputy leader David Campbell Bannerman, likewise a former MEP, told Express.co.uk: “These damning results, and my 10 years as an MEP, tell me there is no real love for the EU.

“People tend to go along with the EU for reasons of fitting in, appearance, compulsion, handouts or history, not from any great appreciation or warmth for it.

“Those running the EU should be deeply worried at these findings.”
