Angler drowns after boat overturns in the Colorado River

GRAND JUNCTION — A man has drowned in the Colorado River after he fell from a boat while fishing near Grand Avenue Bridge east of Grand Junction, authorities said.

Mesa County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Megan Terlecky said deputies responded to a report of a possible drowning Sunday after bystanders saw a body in the river floating next to an overturned boat, The Daily Sentinel reported.

Deputies learned that the man was fishing with two others who were in a different boat that day, Terlecky said, adding that the man attempted to fix his seat near the bridge as their boat went farther down the river.

The men on the other boat didn’t notice the man was in the water until about 15 minutes later, authorities said.

Bystanders from the bridge went down to the river, and they worked together with the two people on the other boat to bring the man to shore, authorities said.

Emergency personnel administered CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies did not release the man’s identity.
