The BBC weatherwoman has predicted slow-moving thundery showers are to sweep the UK as May continues to produce mixed wet weather. Ahead of the weekend, a bank of rain is moving in from across the channel according to Carol Kirkwood, lashing most of the southwest before sweeping into the midlands later on. The skies are unlikely to clear over the weekend with another large wet weather front moving in from the Atlantic bringing more heavy rains and hailstones.

Ms Kirkwood told BBC Breakfast: “Rain moving across the north of Scotland currently curling into Northern Ireland.

“And then this system will bring some rain into some parts of the south later getting into some central areas.

“So not much wind, we are starting off with some showers which are heavy in parts of north-west Scotland.

“Curling all the way round into the north of Northern Ireland where it is also quite heavy.
