Brazil’s President Bolsonaro lifts up masked dwarf thinking he’s a young child

Brazil's president Jair Bolsonaro mistakenly picked up a dwarf thinking he was a child in his latest presidential visit amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The far-right politician went to the city of Aracaju, the capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Sergipe on Monday.

In the viral footage circulated on social media, Bolsonaro, who is not wearing a face mask, is seen greeting large crowds at the airport and excitedly hugging supporters.

Suddenly, he lifts up what he apparently thought was a little boy in a suit and tie, and holds him in the air.

He places him on his shoulder while the masked dwarf shouts: "Legend! Bolsonaro!"

A nearby woman can be heard asking: "Is that a child?"

Bolsonaro seems to realise the confusion and puts the dwarf back down on the ground.

It is said that politicians kissing babies is regarded as a good vote winner.

The video, shared by news outlet Gstv on Twitter with the title “Bolsonaro lifted up a dwarf thinking he was a child,” has been seen 1.7 million times and received over 1,900 comments, many from social media users poking fun at the president.

One viewer posted: "The best is the moment that you see him realise oh sh** its a dwarf. His face is priceless!"

A second wrote: “Damn masks. You can't even recognise family members, who can tell if a dwarf is a child or not.”

The controversial president was elected in January 2019 and is a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage, homosexuality, abortion, and affirmative action.

His reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic, referring to the virus as a "little flu" and shunning lockdown measures, has been widely criticised as Brazil has seen 111,100 deaths according to the latest statistics from the Johns Hopkins University.
