Carer recovering from Covid forced to walk to work after bus driver keeps change

A care worker recovering from the coronavirus had to walk to work after a bus driver refused to give her change.

Sarah King, from Everton in Liverpool, handed the Arriva driver a £5 note.

However, he said it was against company policy to give change – leaving her without the £2.30 for her commute the next day.

Sarah got on the bus and was forced to borrow money from a friend to get home.

The following day, she had to make the hour journey on foot.

Sarah told the Liverpool Echo : “It’s ridiculous. They are taking the money off us so why can’t they hand us change back?

“They should practise what they preach and put gloves on or don’t take the money off us if they can’t then hand money back.

“I don’t mind them taking 20p off me if I give them £2.50 usually but £5 is ridiculous."

It took Sarah over an hour to get to the nursing home in Bootle in the dark “because of the fatigue” post-Covid-19.

She claims the same thing is happening to schoolchildren as well.

Sarah added: “A young boy got on and the same happened, the driver said there’s nothing he can do about it so the poor lad had to get off the bus.

“A girl got on the other day too with £20 and he said can’t give you any change out of that.

“But lucky there were some other people in her group so she paid for them and they gave her it back instead.”

An Arriva spokesperson said: “To help reduce the amount of physical contact between customers and drivers, we are asking customers to use contactless payment or tickets via the new Arriva UK Bus app.

“Cash will only be accepted as a form of payment in exceptional circumstances and where the correct fare can be paid.

“Arriva drivers will not be able to provide change at this time. This policy has been in place since the 17th April and has been widely promoted on our website, social channels and on-board our buses.

“Any excess fares are being donated to the NHS through their Charities Together fundraising scheme.”
