A dad has revealed his horror after an infestation of rats had been causing the scratching sound he'd been hearing at night as they rodents were eating their way through his bed.

The dad, who did not want to be named, lives near Stadt Moers Park, Prescot, Merseyside with his family who have started to be affected mentally and physically by the infestation.

The 44-year-old bloke claims rats have covered his home in faeces and urine, and told how the rats had started eating his bed. Two of his children have reportedly begun suffering with health problems over the last year which he attributes to the vermin.

The LFC fan shared two videos with the Liverpool ECHO of rats inside his home — one of which shows two of them running up the copper piping.

The other, which is believed to have been taken from his bed, the rodent can be heard screeching and scratching from underneath.

He said: "This all started around two years ago and it has been a complete nightmare. The sound of the rats running around under the floorboards and in the walls. And then they started appearing.

"My children would find rats in their bedroom drawers. We often see them running around the house. All of this had been distressing, to say the least. We feel like we have been invaded. "

The dad said at one point the rats started eating the bed he shared with his wife. He said: "We could hear scratching and gnawing in the night so one morning I pulled the bed away and could see that the rats had eaten a hole in the headboard.

"My wife has been on the couch downstairs since. I had to throw the bed out. The house stinks of rat poo and wee. When we open the front door the stench hits you like a punch to the gut."

The man said he suspects the rats got into his house through a broken path at the rear of the property. He said the rats have eaten their way through floorboards and carpets in his children's bedrooms.

He said housing association Livv Housing Group sent inspectors out to his home in October 2020 and in June this year, but the problems persisted. The dad said Melissa and Michael – who both work for Livv Housing – had been very supportive.

Bosses at Livv Housing said they had offered the family temporary accommodation while they resolved the issue.

Tony Cahill, Executive Director of Property at Livv Housing Group, said: “We are aware of the issue relating to a rodent infestation at our customer’s home and we have been in communication with them in an attempt to resolve the matter.

“It is evident that this is a complex case and we understand that this has caused the family some significant distress, which we sincerely apologise for. We have been working with a specialist pest control company in an effort to try and resolve the problem as soon as possible.

“We have also offered to relocate the family to temporary accommodation whilst the issue is being resolved, but this has been declined due to the challenges that a temporary arrangement would bring.”
