Italexit party’s Facebook page reaches 50K as plot to leave in TWO years emerges

Italexit: Italy may be ‘better off without EU’s dynamic’ says expert

Italy would be the most likely of the “Big Four” member states to consider exiting the European Union if Brexit proves to be beneficial to Britain, according to a Euronews poll. Data from the Redfield and Wilton Strategies survey found that nearly half of Italians would be likely to support their country leaving the EU if the UK and its economy are regarded to be in good health in five years. In the event, France and Spain both showed moderate support for changing its relationship with the bloc, while Germany was the member state least likely of the four major players to consider leaving Brussels.

The coronavirus pandemic and the EU’s handling of the crisis has without a doubt stoked feelings of resentment towards Brussels in Italy.

The Italexit party’s Facebook page has grown from 20,000 followers to over 55,000 today.

In an exclusive interview with, party spokesman Sergio Montanaro revealed how he plans to take Rome out of the bloc.

He said: “Our goal is to leave the EU because it is possible.

“It is about political will.

“The Italian people, just like the British, want to get out of this cage.

“Our plan is simple. We will bring into Parliament people who want to leave the European Union.

“Several collections of signatures have been carried out recently but they are pointless as they just collect dust in the end.

“We intend to bring everything into Parliament.”

Mr Montanaro noted: “The problem is that there is a lot of confusion about what to do… when actually it is very simple.

“If we were the governing party, the first thing we would do is trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.

“We would then create a parallel currency flanked by the euro during the two years it takes to actually leave the bloc.

“In those two years, we would negotiate with other states. And all of them will want to do trade deals with us.

“This is because we believe that we carry a message of national identity.

“We’ll get back control of your nation and its currency.”

Mr Montanaro claimed his party was inspired by former Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, who can largely be credited for Britain’s departure from Brussels.

He said about the former MEP: “We admire him a lot.

“For people who want to leave the bloc – and not just for the Italians, but also the Dutch, the French, the Greek – he is the embodiment of the ability to do so.”

Mr Farage has recently rebranded the Brexit Party into Reform UK.

The Brexit Party was set up to campaign for a “clean-break Brexit” ahead of the 2019 European elections, in which it won 29 seats – more than any other UK party.

Now, the prominent eurosceptic is reportedly planning on recruiting 1,000 candidates to stand in this year’s upcoming May local elections.

Little has been revealed of what Reform UK will stand for; however, it is believed the party will push for a more lax approach towards Covid-19 restrictions.
