Manhunt for killer who escaped open prison and last seen near bus station

Killer Marcus Coates has reportedly 'escaped' open jail HMP Leyhill and police are urgently trying to find him.

People are warned if they believe they see Coates, they should not approach him and instead dial 999 immediately.

The 54-year-old, described as a white male at 5ft and 10ins, was last seen near Bristol Bus Station.

He has blue eyes, receding mousey brown hair, and was last sighted between 8.30am to 9.30am on Thursday, October 28.

He was wearing a blue polo shirt, blue jacket, blue jeans, and grey Puma trainers.

Coats has several tattoos, including his name and a rose on his name on his left hand, as well as a heart and West Ham FB on his right arm.

A female's name is tattooed across his knuckles on his right hand, say police.

Coates was found guilty of manslaughter for killing Jennie Banner, 32, in a Chatham flat in 2011.

Maidstone Crown Court heard at the time he strangled her with a belt and left her body for five days.

Avon and Somerset Police issued an appeal to find Coates on Thursday night.

They also released two images alongside the appeal, with a recent CCTV image attached.

The force tweeted: "Officers are searching to find Marcus Coates who has absconded from prison – we're asking for the public to call 999 if they see him. He was last seen in #Bristol city centre, but has links to #Kent and #London."

He was caught on CCTV in his last appearance, with police detailing he has links to London and Kent areas.

If you see Coates, don’t approach, call 999 and give reference number 5221253377. If you know where he may be, call 101 and use the same reference number.
