During the event in the Rose Garden, Melania Trump and the US president met Girl Scouts, nurses and small business owners whilst not wearing face coverings. Mr Trump gave certificates to the Girl Scouts and posed with them.
A tweet posted by the First Lady read: “This afternoon, President of the United States and I hosted some of the heroes of Covid-19 at the White House.
“We listened to incredible stories of unity and patriotism from a nurse, small business owners, Police Officer, and Girl Scouts.
“I am truly inspired by the spirit of American citizens!”
The tweet included pictures of the attendees sat socially distanced from one and other.
Another tweet by the First Lady read: “It was inspiring to hear the acts of kindness and compassion that Girls Scouts Troop 744 has been showing to front line workers during this unprecedented time.
“This is one of just many examples of the spirit we celebrate through #BeBest!”
The accompanying pictures show a Girl Scout wearing a face mask but Trump and Melania without face coverings.
This comes five weeks after Melania shared a photo of herself on social media wearing a face mask and urging Americans to wear them in public settings.
Social media users responded to Melania Trump’s tweets with outrage as she did not wear any face coverings.
One user responded: “How about being compassionate enough toward the Girl Scouts to wear a mask?”
While another user from Florida posted: “Why aren’t you wearing a mask?”
One person from New York responded: “That little girl was the only smart person there wearing a mask.”
