Miss World contestant mysteriously found dead at home after missing photoshoot

A Miss World model's mysterious death was only discovered after she missed a day of work.

Layla da Costa, 24, had been tipped by an industry boss as one "the most promising models" before her body was found at the house she had been renting for work in Italy.

A police investigation was launched this week after concern from colleagues mounted, when she failed to show up to work on Monday.

Layla's body was found at her temporary home in Bologna, Italy's northern Emilia-Romagna region where she was working for the agency Face Models.

Despite the 24-year-old not suffering from any known underlying health conditions, doctors reportedly initially suggested it was a heart attack that killed her.

Tributes to the former Miss World contestant, who was born in Portugal but grew up in Guinea-Bissau, have been paid by her Face Models boss Fatima Lopes.

Fashion designer Ms Lopes told the Portuguese news outlet Observador of Layla's "delicacy, kindness, humility, determination and professionalism".

She also described her as one of the "most promising models" and one of the most amazing people she has ever met, Italy24News reports.

The results of a post-mortem due to take place on Wednesday are yet to publicly confirm a heart attack as Layla's cause of death.

A post-mortem was due to clarify the cause of death on Wednesday, but no updates have since been reported in local media.

Layla's family have reportedly travelled to Italy as the investigation continues.

The model had been elected Miss World Guinea-Bissau, and walked the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week when she was just 19.
