A mum charged with murdering her six-week-old twins initially tried to poison them with drug-laced milk, and may even have spent up to four days with their corpses, according to prosecutors.
Danezja Kilpatrick, 23, was arraigned on Saturday morning (25 April), after being arrested for allegedly murdering her baby son Dakota and her daughter Dallas two days before.
Police found the young boy in Kilpatrick's apartment in Queens, New York, inside a bedroom crib with a blade still inside his skull.
When Kilpatrick was asked about her second baby, she indicated that the infant girl was under the sink, where police founder her body wrapped in a pink blanket.
Adarna DeFrietas, Queens Assistant District Attorney, said Kilpatrick first tried to kill the twins by mixing Pine-Sol, a household cleaner, into their milk and feeding it to them.
However, this was unsuccessful and she then put Dakota face down in the bathtub and ran scalding hot water over his back until he stopped crying, according to the paper.
The young mother then allegedly killed Dallas by plunging a knife into the back of his head, before covering his body with a blanket.
The babies' bodies were found on Thursday after the mum's sister called the police asking for a wellness check at the apartment, but prosecutors say it is possible the twins had in fact died four days earlier.
Police discovered a knife at the scene and decided to bring Kilpatrick in for questioning.
During the arraignment, prosecutors claimed that Kilpatrick, who is said to be mentally ill, had confessed to authorities that she 'didn't want' her children 'anymore' and had originally tried poisoning them.
After the mother's arrest, Kilpatrick had reportedly complained to cops that her infants wouldn't let her sleep.
According to prosecutors, she said: "I just gave up and stopped caring. I didn't care about the babies, that's why I poisoned them."
She also told police, allegedly, that she didn't know the twins' father and she had been trying to care for them on her own.
However, her sister, Quanteya, 39, disputed these claims, telling police she had been helping her younger sibling to look after the infants.
Kilpatrick is charged with two counts of murder, two counts of acting in a manner injurious to a child and one count of criminal possession of a weapon.
Kilpatrick's sister had originally posted a picture of the babies on social media when they were born in March.
Her heart-breaking caption read: 'Huge congratulations to my Sister Danezja on her newborn twins Dallas and Dakota Kilpatrick. I'm so happy for her'.
