Lewis Hamilton has been knighted in recognition of his remarkable career in Formula One just days after he controversially lost out on a record breaking eighth title.

The sporting legend was seen chatting to Prince Charles at Windsor Castle just moments after he presented him with his knighthood on Wednesday morning (15 Dec).

But this wasn't the first time Hamilton had met royalty, as he once met the Queen in person.

As well as being presented with a prestigious MBE by her in 2009, the Formula One driver was also invited to a private lunch with the Monarch.

During the royal lunch date, Hamilton was presented with some advice on his dining etiquette from Her Majesty, Hello! reported.

In a funny anecdote shared on Graham Norton in 2015, Hamilton said: "I got invited to a lunch and was sitting next to the Queen.

"I was excited and started to talk to her, but she said – pointing to my left – 'No you speak that way first, and I'll speak this way and then I'll come back to you.'"

Despite the initial embarrassment, he did have the chance to properly speak to the Queen.

"She is a sweet woman, and we talked about how she spends her weekends, houses and music," Lewis said, adding: "She is really cool."

Lewis has also had several encounters with Prince Harry during his career, including one of the Duke of Sussex's final royal duties in March 2020 when he opened the Silverstone Experience.

Prince Harry even beat Lewis in a pit stop speed test as the Formula One driver exclaimed the game was "fixed" in honour of the royal guest.
