Violent teenage girl who attacked woman, 84, in attempted mugging jailed

A teenage girl has been sentenced to two years in a young offenders institution after pleading guilty to an attempted robbery that left an elderly woman floored.

Would-be mugger Alexandrina Mitkova, 19, attacked an 84-year-old woman on London Road in Enfield, north London, on October 19 – snatching the OAP’s handbag and showing her to the floor.

Mitkova launched her attack at 11:45am while her elderly victim was passing some shops.

The teen approached her victim from behind, grabbed her handbag, wrestled with her victim and then pushed her in the chest, leading the victim to fall into the road and hit her knee.

Mitkova had pulled on her victim’s handbag with such force that the strap broke leading to the OAP falling over and becoming injured.

Passers-by witnessed the incident and rushed to the OAP’s aid – while also detaining Mitkova until police arrived.

The Evening Standard reports that Mitkova was arrested at the scene – and her trial took place at Wood Green Crown Court on Thursday.

She pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and was sentenced to two years’ detention in a young offender institution.

PC Billy Crosby, of the Metropolitan Police’s North Area Robbery Unit, said: "This was a violent attack on a vulnerable elderly lady who was merely walking home from the shops.

"Despite sustaining injuries, I am pleased that she has now recovered and I hope she is able to move on with her life.

"I would like to pay tribute to the members of the public who intervened, assisting the victim and detaining the suspect."

The officer went on to thank the members of the public who had helped catch and detain the teenager at the scene of the incident.

He said: "Mitkova may never have been brought to justice without their brave actions."
