Speaking at a mass gathering to mark the centenary of the ruling Communist Party, President Xi Jinping warned those who try to bully China will face “broken heads and bloodshed in front of the iron Great Wall of the 1.4 billion Chinese people”.

He continued: “The Chinese people are a people with a strong sense of pride and self-confidence.

“We have never bullied, oppressed or enslaved the people of another nation, not in the past, during the present or in the future.”

He also said the Chinese people will “absolutely not allow any foreign force to bully, oppress or enslave”.

The Communist nation leader added: “The people of China are not only good at destroying the old world, they have also created a new world.

“Only socialism can save China.”

He added how China must “accelerate the modernisation of national defence and the armed forces”.

Tang Renwu, a professor of public management at Beijing Normal University, said the speech was in response to the US and Western efforts to “contain” and “suppress” China.

He said: “Xi’s stronger-than-usual response would have the effect of invoking even more patriotic and nationalistic sentiment among the Chinese people.”

Relations between Beijing and Washington have deteriorated over recent months following China’s increasing dominance in the South China Sea.

Amid fears of potential conflict in the region, the US increased its military presence to counter against Beijing, who have built military atolls in the archipelago.

US President Joe Biden told his Chinese counterpart that they will “maintain a strong military presence in the Indo-Pacific just as do with NATO in Europe”.

Mr Biden said: “America won’t back away from our commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms and to our alliances.”

During his speech today, Xi also said China maintains its “unshakeable commitment” to unify Taiwan.

He said: “No one should underestimate the resolve, the will and ability of the Chinese people to defend their national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“All sons and daughters of China, including compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, must work together and move forward in solidarity, resolutely smashing any ‘Taiwan independence’ plots.”

Taiwan has been in a longstanding dispute with mainland China since a separate government was established on the island following the Chinese Civil War in 1949.

The nation remains an important ally of Western countries due to its close proximity to Communist China.

Fears have erupted over recent months that under Chinese President Xi Jinping, Beijing will use military force to reunify Taiwan with mainland China.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said in May: “I wish to emphasise that abiding by the One China principle is one of the things that is key to China-Australia relations.

“Taiwan is a part of Chinese territory which cannot be separated.

“The Taiwan issue is entirely China’s internal affair and is related to China’s core interests and we won’t accept any external forces meddling or interfering in this.”
